Little Flower Spirit Week Trivia/Scavenger Hunt – During the Fall Festival we will have a trivia/scavenger hunt game to celebrate our LF spirit. New Addition To Little Flower Faculty During the week of Oct. 10-14 Mrs. Dubuque was out ill for the entire week. This past week, she has been working half days and has been leaving during the lunch period. In order to maintain continuity Mrs. Mary McKeirnan has been the substitute during all of Mrs. Dubuque’s absences.
As Mrs. Dubuque continues to recover from her illness and in order to assist her, Mrs. Duncan and Mr. Gambaro, we have hired a teacher to accept half of Mrs. Dubuque’s classroom responsibilities. Mrs. Denise Portman will begin teaching 6th grade Math, 6th & 8th grade Art, and 8th grade literature. Mrs. Portman has recently been working as a full-time aid at St. Ann School in Normandy. We are pleased to have her join our staff as she brings a passion for teaching as well as valuable experience. Mrs. Dubuque will continue her responsibilities as home-room teacher as well as 6th, 7th, & 8th grade English and 8th grade Religion. The schedule will remain the same for class times and Mrs. Dubuque will teach in the morning until lunch and Mrs. Portman will teach after lunch. Mrs. Portman will begin teaching on Monday Oct. 31 and Mrs. McKeirnan will continue substituting until that time. Changes To Calendar Regarding All Saints’ Day (Holy Day of Obligation) On Tuesday Nov. 1 (All Saints’ Day) we will begin the school day with a “late start” at 9:30 a.m. Following the delayed start we will have mass at 10:00 a.m. We realize that this delayed start may be an inconvenience for some families. To accommodate the families presented with an inconvenience, we will allow students to be dropped off at the normal morning time at 8:00. The students will be supervised by the teachers until the day officially starts at 9:30 a.m. Students must be dropped off at either the normal 8:00 start time or at the “delayed start” time of 9:30. Pumpkin Sale Final Results Our first annual pumpkin sale was a success. We were able to raise over $600 to support our school/parish. Thank you to Mr. Joe Boston for providing the pumpkins at a very reasonable price and thank you to everyone that participated in making the sale a success! Halloween Party & Parade!!!!!!! On Monday Oct. 31 we will have our annual Halloween Party for students in grades PreK-4th. The party will run from 2:00-3:00. The party will be preceded by the Halloween parade, in which the students wear their costumes and walk around Arch Terrace. The parade will begin at 1:30. Parent-Teacher Conference Sign-Up Forms are available in the school office to sign up for the parent-teacher conferences scheduled for Wednesday November 2 and Thursday November 3. Little Flower Alumni/Good News Do you know of a Little Flower alumnus doing good things (i.e. graduating H.S. or college, excelling in fine arts, music, athletics, professional life, etc.)? If so, please let us know so that we may celebrate the successes of the current and former members of our community. Third “Coffee Talk” Meeting Scheduled The monthly “coffee talk” meeting for November is scheduled for Thursday Nov. 17 beginning at 7:45 a.m. The informal gathering will be held in the school library. Please consider joining us to discuss a variety of school related matters. Lice Prevention Products Available Julie patten, ( better known as Kaitlyn’s mom), will be distributing Organic lice and more importantly lice prevention products this year. The manufacturer is Fairy Tales which is a sulfate, parabin, and sodium free product featuring essential oils of lavender, tea tree, Rosemary, and citronella. The ingredients are safe for everyday use. Average studies show with use of product prevention is 71%-92%. Products layered are almost 100% for a full 24 hours. Treating hoods and helmets are equally important. For more facts, visit www.fairytaleshaircare.com or www.licepreventionnews.com or contact Julie Patten.
Lice Prevention & Tips For Checking For Lice -We would like to take the opportunity to remind parents of healthy practices in keeping your children lice free and for checking your child. We are not aware of any cases of lice in our school this year, but it is important to remind everyone of the importance of checking the children and knowing the proper procedures to deal with any potential cases. 1) Be sure there is adequate lighting when checking your child's head for lice. A brightly lit bathroom or a flashlight will help you spot any lice or eggs. 2) Begin at the nape (bottom) of the neck and work your way up. Lice and eggs can be anywhere on the head but they do prefer warmer places to hide. The lower hairline is a good place to start. 3) Using either your fingers or a tail comb, slowly part the hair down the middle, from the crown to the nape of the neck. Check the part for eggs on the hair shaft (small white specks attached to the hair shaft) or adult lice. The eggs will be well attached and should only be able to be removed by scraping off the hair with your finger nail. 4) Once the first section is checked, part the hair either to the left or right of your original part in very small sections. Check this new parting for eggs and adult lice. 5) Repeat this process throughout the entire back of the head, paying extra attention to the warmer spots at the nape, hairline and close to the ears. 6) When the entire back portion of the head is complete, part your child's hair from the crown to the front hairline and repeat the process for the front of the hair. 7) If lice are found on your child's head treatment must be given immediately. 8) Remove your child's clothing that they are wearing and all bedding on your child's bed. Wash immediately or your child will risk another exposure. All materials such as jackets, hats, scarves, pillow or blanket that your child may have come in contact with will be infested and must be washed. 9) Wash your hands thoroughly once the clothes are in the washer. 10) Go to the drug store and purchase a lice shampoo. Follow the directions given with the product. 11) If you have other children in the house check them for lice as well. If you suspect you may be infected have someone check you or use the lice shampoo just to be safe. 12) Be persistent. The treatment may have to be repeated before the lice or eggs are completely killed. Do You Use Trash Bags? For most of us we use trash bags in many ways. Little Flower now has bags available to support our school & parish. The bags are high quality plastic and available in two sizes. The bags are available in 15 and 39 gallon sizes. The 15 gallon bags come in rolls of 65 and the 39 gallon bags are available in 25 count rolls. Each roll sells for $10 and 35% of each sale is returned to the parish/school. The bags are available daily in the school office or are also available after the 10:30 a.m. children’s liturgy masses held once a month. Help Little Flower defray administrative costs, purchases of books and other expenses by supporting the use of gift cards. Make Land’s End purchases count by using Land’s End Gift Cards. You receive full value of the gift card and Little Flower receives 16% at no additional cost to you! Also remember when placing orders through Land’s end to use Little Flower School Code #900116716 and you will automatically contribute up to 3% of your purchases. Walmart and Target gift cards are also useful for everyday purchases. Gift cards make great gifts as well! Gift cards from various stores are available for immediate purchase every Sunday after Mass. Order forms for other stores are available in the church rectory, on Fast Direct and the school office. Go to www.glscrip.com for a full list of contributing stores. (Please allow up to 2 weeks for delivery of cards that must be ordered). Prayer Kits Available! Some of you may recall from last year, we have prayer kits available for use in your home. The kit is designed to encourage families to place an emphasis on prayer and to take the time to pray as a family. If you would like to request the kit, please send Mr. Baird a Fast Direct message. Thought For The Week “Four things for success: work and pray, think and believe.” (Norman Vincent Peale) We are pleased that we were able to raise just under $100 to support the Maggie Welby Foundation.
